1micha.elok, kevin, johnno56, why chose NaaLaa???
#1
Three of you are actively using NaaLaa to make many games. Why all of you chose NaaLaa? I am really curious. Why not chose RCBasic? What are the advantages of NaaLaa over RCBasic? I really, really want to know. Actually, RCBasic's syntax looks more BASIC than NaaLaa's syntax.

First of all... I 'do' use RCBasic 'and' Naalaa.

Reason: Most of my experience, in relation to programming, has been by using Basic. Both Naalaa and RCBasic have similar syntax to basic. Most of my spare time is used converting RCB to N7 and vise-versa. In most cases this works. Of course there are some syntax that cannot be converted... lol

Advantages:
Naalaa: I find N7's simplified GUI easier to use. The built-in help system (F1 on a keyword) is brilliant. Error trapping is better. (description wise). Modifying the frame rate. 'fwait'. The syntax is "basic-like" and easy to follow. I do like easy.
RCBasic: RCbasic is based on SDLBasic. I have used SDLBasic for many years. RCBasic is 'familiar'. Also I can use an external editor (Geany) for a 'simpler' look and feel. RCBasic can distribute to Android. I think RCBasic is just a touch quicker than N7 (but not by much... lol)

Advice on which one to choose:
Try them both. Test each one for ease of use, speed, community and documentation. Then stick to the one that meets your needs.

Will N7 or RCB make great games? NO... They are just tools... Inspiration makes great games...

Hi, I can't really comment on RC Basic I am afraid, as I have not used it much. The main language that I used a few years ago was Python/Pygame, which is a very versatile language, and very well supported. However, on balance I prefer NaaLaa as personally I find it a little easier to write code in, because of both the structure of the language, and the incredible editor, with the F1 help system which I use constantly. The language has evolved over many years, and it's fantastic that it's still in active development.

I just want to have fun, learn, and satisfy my curiosty about how games are made.

Wow. You chose NaaLaa by random? NaaLaa was luckily selected by you.  Smile

Hi, I see. This topic or thread has a certain effect. The Marcus will know more the active users'(three of  you) thoughts on NaaLaa, which will provide guidance for future development directions.  Smile

Thanks for the detailed comments on both languages.

You look like a very active user of NaaLaa because you updated many project threads of your projects in the sub-forum of this NaaLaa forum in 2025. I think that you like NaaLaa more than RCBasic because you only updated one of your project threads in the sub-forum of RCBasic: https://rcbasic.freeforums.net/thread/88...ot-fractal

Maybe you are not so actively using RCBasic.

I am not very active in either forum. I have difficulty coming up with 'new' ideas. A lot of my projects, N7 or RCB, I keep on my PC mainly because they are incomplete or they don't run very well or they are not good enough to share. As I have stated in the past, I am not a programmer, I tinker with code... I enjoy using both N7 and RCB.... lol

Pascal was the language we started with at the university. Then we moved on to C and C++. I took some extra courses to learn Java and Prolog (... for AI). But before university I had programmed in AMOS and Blitz Basic for many, many years Smile

Today, computer engineers start with Python, which I find incredibly stupid - but let's not get into that discussion Smile

Aurel,

Very, very interesting experience. Sure! Perhaps you are able to help NaaLaa and the NaaLaa community. No doubt. I have read this:

https://www.syntaxboom.com/forum/index.php?topic=6.60

You registered at SyntaxBoom forum recently. Would you mind mentioning NaaLaa(also RCBasic) at that forum? That forum is a forum with many BASIC programmers. You are a member there and writing a post talking about these two languages(NaaLaa and RCBasic) should not be too hard. I meant this sub-forum: https://www.syntaxboom.com/forum/index.php?board=13.0

Try to introduce NaaLaa(also RCBASIC) to them.....
Smile
Furthermore, SyntaxBoom's administrator may add NaaLaa and RCBasic to this:
https://www.syntaxboom.com/forum/index.php?topic=28.0

I believe that Marcus or the whole NaaLaa(and also RCBASIC's) user community will be very grateful to you. Sure. Thanks first!!!  Smile

Aurel himself is a developer of multiple programming languages, so I don't think it's quite in his interest to spread the word about other languages Smile
